Welcome to Photographer by Night, a blog about being a part time photographer as a second career.
I came up with the idea for this blog after many years of trying to decide if I should leave my military career to pursue my photography full time. I just couldn't stop thinking about it, let alone make a decision. Back and forth I went. Problem was, I didn't hate being an aircraft technician.
Then one night it finally dawned on me. What's wrong with doing both? Absolutely nothing. There are just so many people saying "If your not happy, quit your day job and do photography full-time. You can do it!". It's just site after site saying the same thing. That's all great if you hate your job and don't have a family to take care of. Well I don't hate my job and I've got some bills to pay. But at the end of the work day, I love running my portraiture business.
What I've finally realized, is that i want to be able to finish my military career and at the same time keep growing my photography business. There are many people in the same boat as I am but not much advice on how to do this.
Just to give you little bit of an idea of where I'm coming from. I had my business up and running for almost 2 years in Cold Lake AB. I made many mistakes setting things up and also had many successes. It's all a big learning experience. Just when things were picking up, I got transferred to Edmonton AB. Perfect timing......
Now I get to start all over again. This time around I want to share all my information and experiences, good and bad. I'm hoping this blog will become a great resource to photographers starting out. Trying to balance a career, family and photography business is not easy but it can be very rewarding.
So why should you listen to anything I have to say? You shouldn't, I haven't made it yet. But as I try different ideas to grow my business, I will go back and update posts with what worked and what didn't work. You can decide for yourself if you think it could work for you. And I'll always be open to ideas. So for now, you can follow along and view this as kind of a reality blog. See how far I make it.
Please feel free to leave your questions and feedback in the comments.
